6 weeks

YK is leaving for Shanghai this morning. For the next 6 weeks, he will be living and working at the university as part of his industrial attachment programme.

Being the typical mother, I had already prepared the essentials (toiletories and medication) days in advance. And being the typical teenager, he packed just hours before the trip.

When I dropped him off at the airport this morning, I felt my eyes go misty. I didn't think I would tear up but it is impossible for a mother to not feel emotional at moments like this.

How not to miss someone who has been the centre of my life for the last 2 decades? To the kids, I'm their mum, driver, cook, housekeeper, counselor, financier, disciplinarian and friend rolled into one. Our lives are intertwined, and will continue to be until the day they finally leave the nest.

One year ago, YK was away in India for 3 weeks. This time, it will be 6 weeks. I can get used to this. He's no longer my little boy. Last Tuesday, he came home raving about the food at his friend's restaurant.

"You and CH must go there for dinner. The pork belly is so good!" YK is not a fan of fatty pork, so when he says it is good, it must be really good.

Guess where we ate at last Friday? Box n Sticks at Aliwal Street!

Asahi beer - perfect with Japanese food.

The melt-in-the-mouth pork belly, served with rice balls (onigiri) is to-die-for!

The softshell crab sushi wasn't that great.

The clam pasta, cooked with loads of garlic and chilli padi, was fantastic!

The grilled salmon head was very fresh and delicious.

Box n Sticks is a great place for casual dining and good food. The service is warm and friendly and prices are reasonable too.

YK's friend is giving him a 'welcome home' treat at Box n Sticks when he returns in 6 weeks. He can't wait.

He'll be ok. He's no longer a baby (although he will always stay that way in your heart).

By the way, CH seems to have lost weight.

Maybe he'll come back with fluent Mandarin... :-)

WL: definitely haven't lost weight. In fact recent health check says I'm pushing 80kg these days.

It will be a brilliant experience for him, but I can imagine how much you will miss him.
And he has good food to come home to!
