A new obsession

Lychee season is officially over. I can't even find my favourite fruit anywhere in Singapore. Thank goodness, another excellent fruit has taken over that sweet spot. Dates! Not just any date, but the Medjoul date. I've tried various types but Medjoul is my favourite.

It is not called the king or diamond of dates for no reason. They are larger than most dates and under the crinkly amber-coloured skin lies the softest, moist and sticky flesh. It is like biting into honey with texture. This writer describes it so well here.

They're not cheap. A 250g box costs around S$6 (US$5) but they're worth every cent. I eat a few pieces as an afternoon snack or before my run for an energy boost. Each date is packed with potassium and magnesium, certainly healthier than cookies or cakes.

This is probably the best time to buy dates as they're abundant during the month of Ramadan. I'm heading to Giant Hypermart to get fresh supply. I saw a large gift box with hundreds of glistening Medjoul dates inside. It costs over $100. Ouch.
