Another chapter

You would expect little boys to enjoy playing soldiers and policemen. Not my sons. YK grew up wishing he never had to go to the army. Despite hoping the day would never come, he was finally enlisted in August last year. While the basic military training was tough, it didn't turn out to be that bad after all. He emerged pretty unscathed, physically and emotionally. I heaved a sigh of relief.

When he was posted to the medical unit to undergo training as a combat medic, I was very pleased that he'll be learning life-saving skills. It will certainly help him as a bio-science student.

He had watched every single episode of Grey's Anatomy, and I even joked that all these knowledge he had gleaned from the shows might even come in handy now.

What's important is, he'll be able to perform CPR, IV injections or at the very least, know how to handle medical emergencies. For my own selfish reason, it's good to have someone around the house with these skills.

The three months of training has come to an end. It's sad because he has built such good rapport with his peers. The camaraderie is particularly strong when the boys train and live together for months. He is genuinely happy here and he'll miss his friends. They will be posted to different units and life as a combat medic is known to be arduous.
At the passing out parade, parents were invited to affix the Medic arm band for our sons. It was raining when we arrived but stopped just before the parade started. We couldn't ask for better timing.
I love attending parades. The sight of our young soldiers marching to the beat of the drum is quite a sight to behold. It makes me feel so proud to be a Singaporean mom!
This parade is particularly special because I brought CH and SK along with me. This photo makes me smile because we look so happy and relaxed.
And this photo makes my heart burst with love, pride and joy. To be honest, after seeing many people estranged from their family, one of my biggest fears is seeing that happen within mine. I feel that I have done a good job raising them to love and care for each other.
