Oh my knees

We had a downpour during dinner time and poor Rusty couldn't go for his walk until hours later. The trouble with a small dog with short legs is, the entire body gets wet and dirty after trampling on puddles.

So I gave him a warm shower and blow-dried him thoroughly so he wouldn't catch a cold. If he's going to share my bed, he had better be clean and dry!

Funny Huier was talking my running (or lack of) lately. Indeed, I have stopped running altogether. Well, there are several reasons (excuses). Firstly, I can't seem to find the time to run. Before Rusty came to live with us, I could manage a jog around the neighbour just before dinner.

When Rusty re-entered our lives again, my exercise comes in the form of morning and evening walks. During weekends, we take really long walks, meandering through the canal and our hilly estate.

The good thing is, all the aches and pains that I used to suffer from running have disappeared almost completely though I still experience creaky and painful knees while climbing stairs.

Just this morning, I woke up to a very strange sensation on my right knee. The entire knee cap felt like it had detached and was swimming around loosely. Though there was no pain, I was worried that my right leg would collapse when I get off my bed. But I was fine. It could be what they call a 'sloppy' kneecap.

I fear the health of my knees is deteriorating and am quite thankful I have stopped running now. All the pounding through the years have put loads of stress on my knees, ankles and soles. Cutting back on strenuous exercise will help to preserve my ligaments and tissues (or what's left of it).

For now, I'll rely on the daily walks, household chores and gardening to keep fit. Some form of exercise is better than no exercise at all.

I think that's a sensible move - walking is a better exercise in many ways. Wish I could do more walking though, life is a bit crazy at the moment.

i suffered from a bad knee dislocation when i was training in the Police Academy years ago and my routine activities were badly affected. my knees were wobbly and like wat u said, "swimming all over the place".

i had to go physio for half a year.

i supplemented my meals with glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM for 3 years and my knees are almost good as new now. maybe you'd like to try?

the 3 combi help to repair and booster the kneecap functions and all. very good, if u ask me. =)

Wow Rusty is so clean. I do avoid dogs that haven't been washed for years and years.

Indeed some form of exercise is better than no exercise at all. If some type of exercise is no longer good for you, then other types might fit better. GOOD for you! :-D

CKL - Sorry to hear you're so busy. Here I am thinking life in Australia must be less stressful.

Shello - I do miss running though especially when I see people sprinting pass me when I walk Rusty. Maybe you can try light running or brisk walking instead?

Fry - Wow, 3 years physio! I should try your recommendation. Thanks.

MH - He's really clean now that he's living away from the farm. You wouldn't believe this but his paws have a pandan scent. CH didn't believe me but after sniffing, he also agrees.

Amel - Yup. I would imagine it would be too cold for you to go running in Finland, so keep up with your taebo!

Huier - Come to think of it, I do miss the runner's high too! And the leaner and more agile body... Sigh

Try resistance training to build muscle strength specifically for the lower quad around the knee. That's the advice from my trainer.

Fry - Oops, salah. still, 6 months is rather long.

EE - Yah, what I lack is resistance training. CH has been telling me to do squats. I can't just stand there and do squats and nothing else lor...

I can relate to that knee pain. I'm suffering from the very same thing. And I'm sure it's cos of all that running I used to do, not forgetting the amount of times I hit my knee!

One good way of easing knee pains is to make a point of massaging them whenever one's sitting down and one's hands r not otherwise occupied eg while watching TV... this must be done regularly to b effective
