Gold Fish Street

Let me tell you a secret. The whole reason why we went to Hong Kong was to visit Goldfish Street aka Tung Choi Street in Mongkok. No prize for guessing what this street is famous for.

Mongkok, which means 'Busy Corner in Cantonese' is one of the most populated areas in Hong Kong. Busy is probably an understatement. The streets were thronging with people and vehicles day and night. It was even worse on the Saturday we were there.

Being the marine fish enthusiast, YK wanted to have a feel of what's available in Hong Kong. So for 4 straight days, we visited Goldfish Street. Yup, the same shops over and over again.

His friend told him to look for Happiness Aquarium. We found it right away and YK's face was beaming with happiness.

Now, Goldfish Street is a long street flanked by 2 rows of shop houses selling freshwater and marine fishes, reptiles, dogs, cats and small animals. Like everywhere in Hong Kong, there are restaurants, bakeries, dessert shops and street vendors nestled in between the pet stores.

If there is one place that I'm too familiar with by now, it must be the Goldfish Street. The nearest MTR station is Prince Edward.

If you cross over to the next street, you would be on Ladies' Market. That's where you'll find everything that a typical female is interested in.

I wasn't too keen on shopping and jostling with the crowd, so we did a quick walkthrough without buying anything. They were mostly winter wear anyway.

One afternoon, we went over to Flower Market Road, one of the most colourful street markets in Mongkok.

The people in Hong Kong are very particular about buying auspicious plants for their home. Now that Chinese New Year is around the corner, all the shops were overflowing with narcissus bulbs and colourful azaleas.

It's a great marketing strategy how they name their streets. Clustering the shops together promotes keen competition and makes shopping alot easier for the customers.

In case you're wondering, they have a Bird Street, Photocopy Street, Tile Street, Men's street (Temple Street) and Portland Street (Red light district) as well!

Your posts on the parts of HK I'm familiar with make me so nostalgic for that place. When you say Prince Edward station, I can hear that name being uttered in HK Cantonese.

As for Stanley, you shld have visited the new shopping mall accessible just beyond where you ate. Very upmarket yet very HK.

Also, along the narrow alley of the old Stanley mkt, there is one fantastic old fashioned restaurant, serving fantabulous HK Cantonese food. Fresh, good, boisterous! And best for S'poreans, very cheap!

Petunia - Yes, cool and sunny! Ask OKC for recommendations if you're planning to go.

OKC - I had wanted to ask you before we left but you were already in Taiwan. Our HK trip was really last minute! I saw a popular bun shop along Tung Choi Street too. I bought a kind of cake from there one day. It was quite nice.

Auntie Lucia - Oh I saw that little local shop right at the corner but we wanted to sit and rest our feet, so we picked the western restaurant with the view instead.

Aiya, I read about the mall only after we left Stanley. I should have asked you earlier! We traveled all the way there to eat lunch! Could have gone shopping too.
