Weekend delights

Almost 3 years ago, I went for dinner at Samy's Curry with Mother Hen and her hubby. Then they left for Oregon.

Yesterday, we went back for dinner again. This time, the old colonial style building has been cleaned up and given a makeover, it looked brand new again. In fact, the previously sleepy Dempsey Hill area was buzzing with people spilling out of the many eateries last night, the transformation is quite amazing.

Samy's Curry now has a striking neon sign featuring a beautiful peacock.

The restaurant manager kept promoting his famous Samy's fish head curry. "Nope, we don't want fish head curry today", I said.

"How about a small one for two people?" He persisted even when Mother Hen said her hubby doesn't like fish head curry. When we put our feet down, he looked clearly disappointed.

Some years ago, my American friend said after he emerged from our airport. "That big picture of the huge fish head in the pot looks really disgusting. You should tell your airport never to display such a scary picture ever again. It's a frightening sight for tourists!"

I agree. That gleaming fish eye staring at you while you're stabbing at its head can be quite disturbing even for a curry lover like me.

So we ordered curry chicken, tandoori chicken, spicy mutton, cuttlefish and chickpeas. Once again, the manager kept wanting us to order some king prawns and we had to turn him down so many times. Strange guy.

The Briyani rice is served on a banana leaf with some cooling cucumber, dahl curry gravy and crispy papadums. The dishes are in the background. We washed everything down with refreshing lime juice and Tiger Beer.

Samy's Curry has maintained its high standards after all these years. The meats were well seasoned and cooked just right. The chicken pieces were tender while the spicy mutton had that melt-in-the mouth texture. Mother Hen loved the cuttlefish and was giving approving nods with every bite. Overall, a very delicious dinner indeed.

After dinner, we walked to Red Dot Brew House for some more beer. It is set amidst lush greenery with specially landscaped gardens surrounding a microbrewery which is enclosed in a glasshouse. While I was quite intrigued to see the large steel vats, I wasn't too pleased to be attacked by mosquitoes the whole night. Yup, it's a lovely place with water features and tropical plants, but it's a favourite hideout for other blood sucking creatures too.

Still, we had a lovely time.

Here's what I made for lunch today. Pasta again.

Water - Not many vegetarian dishes. When we were there, there was chickpeas and curry cauliflower. Other than that, all were meat dishes. I think your hubby would like this place.
