The (otherwise) calm Saturday ended with a mid-night visit to the A&E department at the nearest hospital. YK has been coughing the last couple of days but had difficulties breathing last night. The ventolin inhaler which normally relieves the conditon didn't seem to work at all.
With a history of asthma, we were worried about the onset of an asthma attack, so I drove him to the hospital nearby. We were greeted by hospital staff donning mask, and were subjected to temperature checks. Needless to say, we ended up wearing mask like everyone else. The stated waiting time was 3 hours but we were lucky to be out of there in less than 2.
The doctor identified the problem as a badly inflammed throat and airways which caused the laboured breathing. Fearing an asthma attack, he prescribed a course of steroids and some medicine for the cough and inflammation.
It's a good thing YK has more or less outgrew this condition. He used to wheeze whenever he ate the wrong food or get an asthma attack when he had a bad cold. Many times he had to be hooked up to the neubiliser at the family clinic. I'm glad those delicate growing years are over.
He seems better now. The medication is working. What a relief.
