It's a sleepy afternoon at the office. So, when the latest Intrepid Adventure newsletter arrived in my mailbox, I started reading the travel tales. Now this is interesting.
I know the Aussies are notorious for shortening words like brekky (breakfast), sanga (sandwich), snag (sausage), barbie (barbecue) but I never knew about the rhyming slang. For example, to have a 'Captain Cook' is to have a look. Your 'china plate' is your mate and the 'billy lids' are the kids.
Upon further checking, I found out that a simple minded person is also known as the Wombat which happens to be my favourite Aussie animal, and that a Yobbo is a loutish, surly youth. Here are some really cute ones that put a smile on my face:
Ankle biter - a small or young child
Cakehole - mouth
Crapper - toilet
Dunny - an outside toilet, lavatory
Dick stickers - mens brief style bathers
Hair of the dog - an alcoholic drink taken to relieve a hangover
Hard yacka - hard work
She'll be apples - all is well
Spit the dummy - get very upset about something

Loo - another term for toilet. Incidentally, there's a suburb of Perth called "Innaloo". Awesome.

Sunnies = sunglasses
Wanker = tosser = ... you should know this one. Hah!

I must admit, we tend to use a lot of those expressions in the UK. Particularly hair of the dog, spit your dummy out, Bob's your uncle and cake hole!

My mum is forever saying, "Oh my giddy aunt!" It's a strange expression and I haven't actually heard anyone else use it! And once she even said. "My aunt is so giddy she has fallen over!"

Woah! I'm really loving the template/theme of this website. It's simple,
