Childhood fears

When I was growing up, I ran around like a tomboy, catching spiders and climbing trees. I was actually quite fearless. I know a great number of kids who fear monsters under the bed, lightning, thunder and even the wind! Last night's TV program showed a toddler who freaks out when the wind chime in his house starts tinkling in the wind!

When CH told me about his childhood fears, I couldn't stop laughing! Here's what he said, in his own words...

When I was very young I could read very well, so I was often reading books that are quite advanced for my age. One day I read that we lived on the planet Earth (forgot how old I was), which was an unsupported ball floating in space, I suddenly became very afraid. Of what I don't know, maybe that we'll somehow fall off, or the Earth will fall down or something. I was so afraid I wouldn't touch the book, or go near the book shelf. Even when the news came on (during those days, TV news started with a graphic of a spinning globe) I would hide behind the sofa. My family was convinced that I was afraid of the Indian newscaster :-D

For conquering your childhood fear, Mr CH, I present you the Globe Award!
Do you remember yours?

i was a tomboy too... well, i still am a tomboy i guess. but i can't remember what i was afraid of. i guess the "devil" under my bed. it wasn't a monster, i was sure it was the devil.
i didn't like to go to bed, needless to say.

Oh for an update... when I got older and came to terms with our planetary existence, the world of astronomy threw me another curve... I read about black holes, these all-consuming corpses of dead stars would attract so hard that even light could not escape. At night I would fearfully look up in the night sky for signs of a cosmic drainhole sucking up the stars, eventually coming for us...

Aiyoh, it's one fear after another... Should I award you with a Drainhole for conquering this other fear too?

Well, I used to read ghost stories. From a very, very young age. I don't know what in the heck my mom was doing not to have been aware of it. Anyway, ghosts were a scary subject for me back then...

Our guava tree once developed some sort of plant disease. The leaves had big ugly bumps and the fruits had nasty scabby stuff. The tree was right next to our door, I was so freaked out by it, I couldn't enter/leave the house by myself!

Oh, I think I have seen plants with diseases like that! But this must have been really bad to scare you like that Seagrape!

When I was younger,
My mum told me that there was this monster call Yoyo.

Its face is like a clown and it springs off like Jack-In-The-Box.

Except that there is not box. So it hops around. It was about 12 storeys high.

We lived in the 11th storey back them and I used to swear I saw them outside my windows. Haha.

I guess that Yoyo story was made up to scare me so that I will go to sleep. (Its suppose to catch children who doesn't go to bed at night.)

That stayed with me for a couple of years man.

I'm embarrassed to say that I was a afraid of a painting! My Grandmother really enjoyed painting, but she just wasn't a great artist. She painted a picture of clown to hang in my room when I was a child. It was a scary looking clown! I was sure that clown was watching me and I was terrified of it. My mother was reluctant to take the picture down because she didn't want to hurt my Grandmother's feelings!
