What's for dinner?

My blog is evolving into a food diary! Here's what we ate for dinner tonight.

To balance out the meat dishes, I did a really plain stir-fry using butter lettuce, minced garlic and sunflower oil. It's light and crispy.

I had a big block of tofu in the fridge and decided to make Tauhu Goreng. I panfried the tofu and cut into smaller pieces and piled thin slivers of cucumber and blanched bean sprouts over it. Then I poured over a peanut dressing made using freshy roasted and ground peanuts, garlic, tamarind water, lime juice, brown sugar, chilli paste and dark soya sauce. The sweet and tangy sauce went very well with the vegetables and tofu.

I was surprised to see these huge squids at the fishmonger on Wednesday. They were at least a foot long! Remember I recently dreamed about giant squids at the fishmonger? It's funny how my dream became a reality. Well, I didn't want a huge squid, so I picked the smallest one which was still almost a foot long. I decided to make calamari rings for dinner. Preparation is very simple. Just season with salt, curry powder and some pepper. Toss the cut pieces into a small bag of flour and shake until nicely coated. Panfry quickly and serve.

I panfried a piece of salmon steak and garnished with teriyaki sauce. Salmon steaks are so tricky to fry. By the time the skin and outer layer gets burnt, the centre still displays a shade of blushing pink. So frustrating! I ended up breaking it into pieces to ensure that every part is cooked through.

Here is the comfort food - braised pork ribs. In my enthusiasm to comfort CH, I cooked too much and now we have some leftovers in the fridge.

Funny thing is that I don't like nuts too much, but I like peanut dressing, esp. with tauhu and some other veggies. ;-D

Yummy food! In comparison my cooking is so simple due to limited choice of ingredients & lack of time. I actually prefer my salmon to be slightly pink as I think it's too tough if it's cooked through.

A foot long squid? Wow!

Your food looks gorgeous. I'd love your left overs!

I'm going to a friends house for vegetable curry tonight. And quite frankly it can't come quick enough!

It IS a food blog! I tend to agree with ckl too about the salmon and have it slightly pink and soft in the middle... Calamari rings looks delish as well! Now you'll have to study up on taking pics of food and turn your blog into a gourmet's delight!

Amel - You're funny. When I was making the tauhu goreng, I did wonder if you would like this dish cos I was thinking to myself, anyone would like it! It's one of our all time favourites.

CKL - I think your kids are still young and probably not so demanding when it comes to meals yet. I like salmon to be slightly undercooked too but in my case, I got the fish from the local fishmarket and it has been in the freezer for a week now, so I feel it is safer to cook it through or we may get sick. It's too dry for my liking though but better safe than sorry.

World - I'm sure you would enjoy your curry vegetable dinner better now after I've made you hungry!

MH - When I was doing this post, I did wonder also if you could do this in Oregon? I guess it would be call for a trip to Portland to buy tofu, bean sprouts and these Japanese cucumbers. Oh, and assam too. Aiya, too much trouble.

Wen - ..and the kids are saying, now that I keep blogging about food, I'm going to lose all my readers!

JY - Oh, calamari rings are so easy to cook. I'm sure Coffee would love it too.

And my pictures... this camera sucks big time (like the giant tentacles!) when it comes to close up indoor shoots. I feel like tossing it into the fryer everytime I take pictures of food. What I need is a semi-SLR!
